František Bílek built his studio villa in Prague´s Hradčany quarter between 1910 and 1911, using his own design. Bílek was primarily a sculptor and a printmaker, but his approach to work inspired by religious faith urged him to design and create environments in which his works would produce the maximum impact, in compliance with their mission of enhancing the spirituality of human life.
The villa, now newly open to the general public offers to its visitors, apart from a peek into František Bílek´s studio, a permanent display of several of the artist´s early works, plus a collection of his output in the field of the art of the book. The basement, which houses the newly formed Bílek Centre, is reserved for the study of archival materials related to the artist´s life and work.
The exhibition aims at demonstrating on a selected assortment of František Bílek´s works (including sculpture, reliefs, drawings, prints, furniture, and pottery) the overall character of his artistic idiom, thereby presenting to the spectators a comprehensive view of Bílek´s contribution to Czech and international modern art.
The official opening of the Villa Bílek was accompanied by the publication, through the joint efforts of the City Gallery Prague andArbor vitae publishers, of the book, František Bílek andHis Prague Studio, which became the pilot title of a new series centered around Bílek.

History of Bílek´s House in Chýnov
František Bílek´s house in Chýnov was built according to artist´s designs in 1898 and its primary role in his conception incorporated the need for a spacious, bright studio. Bílek´s house in Chýnov is, similarly to the villa in Prague, situated freely in natural surroundings.
The house in Chýnov is František Bílek´s first architectural realization in which he follows ideological art components, which principals he was to later use in the design of his Prague villa in Hradčany. Remarkable iconographic concept of the Chýnov house, including stucco reliefs on the facade that represent human life from birth to the moment of death, is the original idea in architectonical work conception.
The Gallery owns the house since 1990. In 1994, after a demanding restoration, the Gallery opened there a permanent exposition oriented mainly to author´s early works, with examples of authentic Bílek´s furniture.
