The Troja Palace is definitely a place where nature and history are beautifully wedded. Near this gem, you can find the St. Clare Vineyard which used to be connected to the Troja Palace by a path and stairs. Today they are separated by a busy road, but still they form a no less harmonic whole.

This protected vineyard reminding us of the faded glory of Prague viniculture was probably there as early as under the reign of Wenceslas II. Grapes were processed there in huge cellars which could be entered by entire wagons.

The St. Clare Chapel was built on top of the vineyard at the end of the 17th century. The constructor, count Václav Vojtěch from Šternberk had the chapel dedicated to St. Clare, patron and namesake of his wife. According to him the reason for building the chapel was that people living around his palace were often unable to attend church services due to frequent floods. The chapel is a simple baroque building and supposedly the only chapel dedicated to St. Clare in Prague, and possibly in Bohemia.

The chapel’s decoration is simple, but the view of Prague from its gallery is magnificent. If you are a fan of esotericism, you may find interesting that this chapel is allegedly a part of significant energy lines of old Prague.

If you prefer good wine instead, you will be more delighted by the vineyard house no. 34 which was changed into the St. Clare Wine Shop. The wine from this vineyard can only be bought in this wine shop which is directly in the centre of the vineyard. It is a beautiful place inviting you to a nice sit-down.

You can however find an even more beautiful place for relaxation when you take the path above the vineyard to the Botanical Garden. You will enter the amazing kingdom of plants in the Japanese Garden. Japanese gardens usually encourage people to perceive nature and bring about tranquillity and ease of mind. May this miniature of mountain landscape with a stone bridge over a stream, a tea house, and winding paths bring something positive to you as well.
(Admission to the garden in winter is free, while during the season you need to buy a ticket.)
